Vidyarthi Vigyan Manthan (2021-22)

VVM (Vidyarthi Vigyan Manthan) 2021-22, India’s largest science talent search online examination using digital devices was held in the months of November and December, 2021. It was organized by VIBHA (Vijnana Bharati) in association with Vigyan Prasar, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India and NCERT, Ministry of Education, Government of India.

Sixty-one students from Garden High School, Kolkata, from Classes 6 to 11 participated in the examination.

All the participants of the State Level camp and winners were felicitated on 3rd April, 2022 at CSIR – Indian Institute of Chemical Biology, Jadavpur, Kolkata.

The state level winners, Ankur Ghosh (9D) and Raul Chowdhury (6E) received a prize money of ₹51,000 in the award ceremony held on 11 May 2022 at Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science – IACS Jadavpur.

The Budding Genius !

Our pupil, Sagnik Ghorai of Class VII (present Class VIII), was awarded the Gold medal for  ‘The Budding Genius’ quiz held on 26 March 2022.

Year End Activity-Primary School

The year end activity ‘Talent Display’ was held on 15.3.22 for Nursery 1, Nursery 2 and the Preparatory class. Class 1 had theirs on 16.3.22 and Class 2 on 17.3.22. The children enthralled their teachers with their soulful renditions of songs, dances and dramatic poetry. This is not all, the synthesizers, the drums, the guitars, the sarod and the sitar and even an ukulele were handled with such confidence and self assurance that the teachers were teary eyed with love and pride for their little ones.

And wonder of wonders there were even magic shows, puppet shows and science experiments put up by our enthusiastic little ones. The academic year has come to an end and we are very happy and satisfied at the thought of sending up responsible and well adjusted little ladies and gentlemen to the next class.

Satikanta Guha Foundation in collaboration with the Kolkata Municipal Corporation Borough XII had organized a second Covid Vaccination Camp at the School premises, exclusively for the eligible pupils of Classes VIII – XII of Garden High School and Garden High International School on 11 February 2022.

Class V – January Activity – Republic Day

The students of Class V celebrated Republic Day of India and the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose through the month of January 2022 on the virtual platform. The rich cultural heritage of our country and the national hero’s glory were remembered and celebrated by the students with enthusiastic presentations of dance, songs and recitations, keeping to the theme of patriotism. Some children also showcased their artworks on this occasion.

Class III – January Activity – Science Experiment

Experiments provide insight into cause and effect through demonstration. In the month of January, class III students performed simple science experiments using common household items. They enjoyed themselves thoroughly while learning by doing.

Inter-House Spelling and Word-building Competition

Class III participated in an Inter-House ‘Spelling cum Word-Building Competition’ held online on Zoom on 29 January 2022. Each of the Houses was represented by a team of 2 main participants and a reserve participant. Cedar House was represented by Alekhya Roy (IIID), Suvan Maity (IIIC) along with Raunak Chatterjee (IIIB). Shreedatri Chatterjee (IIIA), Sumedha Ganguly (IIIA) accompanied by Brinda Saha (IIID) participated from Chinar House. Aahir Mondal (IIIA) and Sourjyadeepto Das (IIIE) represented Oak House, supported by Debadittya Mitra (IIID). The participants from Palm House were Samadrita Gupta (IIIE), Iresha Ghosh (IIIC) and Biboswan Das (IIIC).

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The competition comprised a total of four rounds covering topics such as spelling, unscrambling jumbled letters to form meaningful words, synonyms and antonyms, collective nouns and homophones.

The four rounds came to an end with Chinar House and Cedar House tied for the first position while Oak House and Palm House secured the third position jointly.

There was a short tie- breaker round after which Chinar House came out with flying colours securing the first position.

Inter-House AD making Competition: Class VIII

Garden High School conducted an Inter-House ‘Ad Making Competition’ for students of Class VIII. The event was pre-recorded and students with their innovative ideas introduced different kinds of futuristic learning devices in their ad films. The judges were Susanta Das Gupta, an advertising and communications professional and Abhishek Ganguly, an independent filmmaker and creative consultant.

 

Cedar house developed a portable Wikipedia, ‘Walking Wikis’. Their device was developed to access a storehouse of information in an immersive 3D projection.

Oak house designed ‘smart gloves’ which can interpret hand gestures and sign language into audible human speech. Their learning device was aimed to reach out to all those who deserve to be heard.

The team comprised: Titas Sengupta (VIII E), Anjistha Das (VIII E), Siddhartha Santra (VIII A), and Ayushman Dey (VIII B). (Clockwise from left to right in picture.)

 

Chinar House innovated an electronic device ‘Study Buddy’, to aid the students in their learning process. The device can be used with / without an internet connection, helping students clear their queries and doubts.

Palm House reinvented the method of teaching science through their fully simulated virtual laboratory solution ‘Alpha Labs’. The virtual laboratory simulator will enable students perform laboratory experiments from any part of the world.

My Favourite Storybook Character – Class IV Activity

Pupils of Class IV put up splendid presentations on their favourite storybook character. Some pupils dressed as their favourite character, while others made sketches and paintings of the same. Pupils spoke with great enthusiasm on the topic. A few of them shared PowerPoint presentations as they did so.

Republic Day Special – Primary Section

To commemorate our 73rd Republic Day, the children of the Primary Section spent an interesting hour on January 25,2022.The pupils of the Preparatory Class, Class 1 and Class 2 had quiz sessions where they were asked questions about their country. Apart from verbal questions, clips were shown to them and they had to say what the pictures were speaking about. Nursery 1 and Nursery 2 were given National Symbols to colour and little heads were seen bent over the pictures with total absorption. Our pupils were dressed in ethnic wear and before the start of the session, they were explained what the ‘Constitution’ meant, in very simple language.

Sagnik Ghorai, student of Garden High School, Class VII D, participated in the Bricsmath International Mathematics Competition, and was awarded ‘CERTIFICATE OF THE WINNER’.

This competition brought together children from 7 countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Indonesia and Vietnam).

Activity for the month of December – Class IV

‘The Person I Am Grateful To’
(Thanksgiving)

Pupils of Class IV made cards to thank the people around them. While some chose to thank their parents, grandparents or other relatives, some noted the contribution their neighbours, domestic help, doctors or municipal workers had in their lives. Frontline workers and environment activists too found gratitude from the dear little hearts who expressed their thankfulness in a minute-long heartfelt speech.

Garden High School conducted a Quiz Competition for Class VI on 4 December 2021 on the Zoom platform. Curiosity or the thirst for knowledge, the greatest weapon of a child, was aptly challenged by our very own Quiz Masters Abhrajit Bhattacharyya and Shubhrajit Bhattacharyya, ex-students of Garden High School. The scorekeeper was Sanjukta Adhikary (IXE) and the time keeper was Monoshij Ghosh (XIA)

Cedar House was represented by Ahan Sengupta (VIC), Swapnil Roy (VID), Rudraveer Mandal (VIF) and Ushasi Banerjee (VIF)(reserve).

Chinar House was represented by Megholina Banerjee (VID), Anushka Das (VIF), Kalpita Mukherjee (VIF) and Tuhinanshu Ray (VIC)(reserve).

Oak House was represented by Aishik Moitra (VIB), Anurag Sen (VIC), Shourya Saha (VIC) and Aaron Dey (VIF)(reserve).

Durga Puja/ Diwali – Class V Activity

 

The pupils of Class V celebrated Durga Puja and Diwali during the months of October and November on the virtual platform. Attired in coloured costumes, the children put up dances, sang songs and recited poems through a variety programme. Some children drew ‘rangoli’ patterns while others painted earthen lamps (diyas).

Annual Inter School fest hosted by Lilavatibai Poddar High School, Mumbai

Zenith was hosted on 29 and 30 October 2021. Garden High School was represented by a contingent of 30 pupils from classes IX to XII. The fest was an amalgamation of talents and a celebration of creativity on the national platform.

The team comprised actors Sheersha Banerjee (X A), Raj Jyoti Sikdar (XI C), Rajarshi Dutta Gupta (XI C), Abhipsha Dhar (XI C), Ishaan Mukherjee (IX D), script writer Diya Burman (IX D) and editor Monoshij Ghosh (XI C). The team prepared an advertisement clip for TATA Soulfull’s Ragi Bites Fills Range. They were declared the winner.

Class V Inter-House ‘WhatIf’ Competition 2021

Garden High School conducted an Inter-house ‘WhatIf’ Competition for class V on 13 November 2021. The event was held on zoom and all the participants put up a great performance, impressing everyone who were present.

From Oak House, the participants were Tanirika Bhattacharjee (VA) and Srobona Majumdar(VE) . From Palm we had Samriddhi Debnath (VA) and Shauranshu Das(VB). From Chinar the participants were Adishree Das(VD) and Eenakshi Saha (VC). Cedar House was represented by Abhigyan Ray (VD) and Madhurjya Mukherjee (VC). The moderators for the event were Monal Choudhury(IXA) and Sagnik Das(IXA). Shubhangee Chowdhury(IXA) was the timekeeper for the event while Samhita Mitra(IXA) helped with the photography. The judges for the event were our very own teachers, Mrs. Parnika Sen and Mrs.Dipanwita Basu.

Festive Frolic – Class IV Activity

Pupils of Class IV made drawings and crafts that represented their favourite festivals. They dressed in their best clothes and gave short speeches with great enthusiasm on the significance of their chosen festival.

Class VII Inter House Literary Character Enactment Competition 2021

Garden High School conducted an Inter-House Literary Character Enactment competition for Class VII on 25 September 2021. The event was conducted via Zoom and had some very good enactment done by all the participants.

Chinar House was represented by Arhan Dasgupta (VIIB) and Ariv Paul (VIIF). Oak House had Ahona Basu (VIIB) and Samadarshee Roy (VIIE). Cedar House was represented by Anoushka Dasgupta (VIID) and Abhideep Roy (VIIB). Sparsh Lohia (VIIF) and Aayushi Sahoo (VIIB) were the participants from Palm House. The moderators for the day were Monal Choudhury (IXA) and Sagnik Taraphdar (IXA). Shubhangee Chowdhury (IXA) was the time keeper of the event while Ayushman Dey (VIIIB) helped with the photography. The event was adjudged by Mrs. June Dutta and our Pro-Rector, Mrs. Kavita Guha.

GHS @ X-UBERANCE ’21

X-Uberance was hosted on 8 and 9 October 2021, by St Xavier’s Collegiate School. 23 well-known schools of Kolkata battled it out in a maximum of 22 senior events (Classes IX-XII) and 6 junior events (Classes IV-VIII). Garden High School participated in 17 senior events and 4 junior events. A contingent of 55 pupils from classes V to XII represented the school in a variety of competitions, and after a stellar performance, Garden High School won the fest.

Senior Events

X-Calibre (Debate): The two- member team of Ishaan Mukherjee (IXD) and Arunava Bhattacharya (XIIB) won the 2nd place in the event.

 

 

 

 

X-Mate (Chess): Sheersonno Biswas (IXA) was placed 2nd in the event.

 

X-Valorant (Valorant, e-gaming): The Valorant team of the school was formed by Swarnava Paul (XIA), Ritam Majumdar (XIA), Rudvick Sengupta (XIB), Rajrup Aich and Debargha Roy (XIC). They won the 1st place in the event.

 

X-Raga (Eastern Music): The team consisting of singers, Adrija Saha (XIA), Aagnik Pandey (XIIC), Monoswita Sengupta (IXD) and Adrija Mukherjee (IXE), accompanied on the synthesizer by Agneesh Raychaudhuri (XIA) and the editor for the video, Rishan Chatterjee (XIA), was placed 3rd in the event.

X-Acoustic (Western Music): Our school was represented by Agneesh Raychaudhuri (11A) on the synthesizer, Udbhas Saha (11A) on the drums, Rahul Mukherjee (11A) and Sayan Bhowmik (12A) on the guitar, Olivia Bagchi (11B) as the vocalist, and Swarnava Saha (11C) as the editor. The team was placed 1st in the event.

X-Trivia (Junior Quiz): The two- member quiz team, formed by Anjistha Das (VIIIE) and Nilankan Das (VIIIC), represented our school. They won the 2nd place in the event.

 

 

X-Tunes (Junior Western Music): The team consisted of Aditya Dhiran (VIIB), Hansini Gayen (VIIB), Aishani Basu (VIIF), Shivangi Dasgupta (VIIIB), Aatiqa Zulfikar (VIIID), Anusha Chowdhury (VIIIE), Titas Sengupta (VIIIE) and Anjistha Das (VIIIE) as singers, along with, Hansini Gayen who played the guitar, Aditya Dhiran played the violin and Shivangi Dasgupta played the synthesizer.. CLASS IV INTER-HOUSE LIMERICK WRITING COMPETITION 2021

GHS conducted the Inter-House Limerick Writing Competition for Class IV on 18 September 2021. All 8 participants, two from each house, had to compose a 5-line limerick on each of the two topics: ‘A Lazy House Cat’ and ‘The Crooked Tree’.

In the first ten minutes of the first zoom session, all the participants came up with excellent limericks, which they read out to the audience in a second zoom session. The competition was adjudged by our Pro-Rector, Ms Kavita Guha and Ms June Dutt.

Cedar House was represented by Rajoshik Ghosh (IV C) and Aarna Sen (IV F). Teesta Ray Chaudhuri (IV A) and Jasmitha Mandal (IV C) represented Oak House. From Chinar House, we had Sharanya Bhattacharya (IV F) and Kushagra Mandal (IV C), and last but not least, Shriyadrita Das (IV A) and Shreya Saha (IV A) represented Palm House. The moderators for the day were Monal Choudhury (IX A) and Shubhangee Chowdhury (IX A), while Sagnik Taraphdar (IX A) was the time-keeper and the photographer was Samhita Mitra (IX A).

Saijayani Banerjee (IXB) has made us proud with her exceptional performance in tennis at the Haryana ‘Under 18 All India Championship Series’ in Karnal. She won in both the singles and doubles category at Chamunda Tennis Academy.

As always, the children made us proud on October 7, when all participants from the Primary School(Nursery 1-Class 2), excelled themselves during the Activity, we named, ‘Festival Special’. They appeared dressed impeccably and aesthetically in their special festival clothes as the character they represented, spoke on their chosen festival and conquered all hearts. The parents deserve a very big ‘Thank You’ for their unstinting help and keen enthusiasm in every field of their children’s work in school. We are equally proud of you too dear parents!

Inter School fest hosted by the M.P. Birla Foundation Higher Secondary School on 28 and 29 September 2021.

Participating in 14 different events across two days, Garden High School was represented by a contingent of 57 pupils from classes VI to XII. It was a competitive fest, yet fun filled and a great learning experience for all.

The Events and the participants were:

Quotient (quiz): The junior team comprised Anurag Sen (VIC), Ariv Paul (VIIF) and Arhan Dasgupta (VIIB). They were placed 3rd in their event.

 

 

 

 

Wrangle (debate): The two- member team of Ishaan Mukherjee and Nandini Chaudhuri, both from Class IXD won the 2ndplace in the competition.

 

 

 

Express Express (creative writing): In the senior category for Bengali, Ankur Ghosh  (IXD),  was placed 2nd.  Anjistha Das (VIIIE) won the 3rd prize in the junior category (English).

 

 

Colour Your Thoughts (poster making): Tiyasa Majumdar ( XIA), and Swagato Biswas (VIIIC) ,  were placed 3rd in their respective senior and junior categories.

Bandish (Eastern music): The team comprised Titas Sengupta (VIIIE), Adrija Mukherjee (IXE), Monoswita Sengupta (IXD), Meghbalika Adhikary (IXD), Agneesh Raychaudhri (XIA), Mehul Sarkar(XIIB) with the editor Rishan Chatterjee (XIA). They secured the 3rdposition.

Rhythm (Eastern Dance): The senior team comprised Rahi Dey (IXF), Krityali Sau (XD), Sheersha  Banerjee (XA) ,Sneha De (XIB) , Dishari Chowdhury (XIC), Shreya Sutradhar(XIIC) and the editor Swarnava Saha (XIC). They were placed 3rd.. The junior team- Srimoyee Chaudhuri (VID), Sreenita Banerjee (VIIIA) and Swarnava Saha (Editor) (XIC) was also placed 3rd in their event.

Kaleidoscope (science event): Sayan Roy and Prajjakta Pal, both of class IXA, were placed 2nd in the event.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

64 Squares (chess) : The school was represented by Saanket Das of IXC and he won the 2ndprize in the event.

 

 

 

 

Toss Up (fireless cooking): Dhismita Paul of class IXC, won the 1st position in the event.

 

 

 

 

Cacophonix (Western Music): The team consisting of Nandini Chaudhuri (IXD), Diya Barman (IXD), Olivia Bagchi (XIB) ,Udbhas Saha (XIA), Atri Adhikari (XIIA), Aagnik Pandey  (XIIC) and the editor Aatmashri Sanyal  (XIIC) ,  was placed 2nd in the competition.

 

Clutch (Valorant, e-gaming ): The school was represented by Ritam Majumdar (XIA), Rudvick Sengupta (XIB) , Ashmit Roychowdhury (IXB) , Rajrup Aich ( XIC), Swarnava Paul (XIA) and Debargha Roy (XIC) as standby. They won the 1st place.

Students of Class IV donned their ‘Chef Caps’ to exhibit their culinary skills for the Cook-in activity this month. The pupils participated with a great deal of enthusiasm and went all out to serve a spread of dishes like sandwiches, ‘Masala Muri’, burgers, salads, desserts as well as milkshakes, mocktails.

In September, the pupils of Class V celebrated Teachers’ Day with great excitement. During class, they performed dances, played instruments and sang, recited poetry, and made speeches about respect towards teachers. They also talked about how much they missed interacting with their teachers in person.

CONGRATULATIONS TO SAIJAYANI BANERJEE !

Saijayani Banerjee, Class IX Section B, participated in the Lawn Tennis tournament organized by the All Assam Lawns Tennis Association, Guwahati. She won the Doubles crown along with Vanilla Gugurapatti from Telengana on 2 September 2021.

In the Under 16 “All India Super Series” at Jhajjar (Haryana), Saijayani became the Finalist for the Doubles and the Semi-Finalist for the Singles Championship.

Congratulations to her for the wonderful achievements !

Independence Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm by the pupils of Class V during their online classes. This year, yet again, Independence Day was celebrated virtually during online classes, but nevertheless the fervour remained the same. The pupils of Class IV presented a beautiful programme which included singing patriotic songs, recitation, dance and speeches by students. At the end of the programme all pupils as well as teachers saluted the flag and sang the National Anthem.
